The Barcelona Open, also known as the Comte de Godó Trophy and for sponsorship reasons as the Barcelona Open Banco Sabadell, is a professional tennis tournament held annually on clay at the Real Club de Tennis Barcelona complex.
On the occasion of the inauguration of the new headquarters of the Real Club de Tennis Barcelona 1899 in the Pedralbes district in 1953, Carles Godó i Valls, second Count of Godó, launched a new tennis tournament organized by the said club. This new competition inherited the old competitions that had been held in Barcelona such as the International Championship, the spring and summer competitions or the various competitions between clubs.
The tournament has achieved great resonance and prestige in the various sports competitions held in the Catalan capital, and has become one of the most socially resonant sporting events in the city. From the year 1968 receives the mention of International Championships of Spain. It is, historically, the most important tennis tournament played in Catalonia and the Catalan Countries and one of the most prestigious in Europe on clay. In 2002 she celebrated her golden wedding. From 2013, the number of participants in the main table was reduced from 56 to 48.
The 2020 edition was suspended due to the 2019-2020 coronavirus epidemic that affected around the world and for which, the ATP decided to suspend all tournaments to be played between March and April of 2020.
Two years later, the cranes re-entered the facilities of the Real Club de Tennis Barcelona-1899 to begin the assembly of the Barcelona Open Banco Sabadell. Following the cancellation of last year’s edition due to the impact of the pandemic, the 2021 edition will be organized following all the safety and hygiene measures decreed by the authorities.
With the adaptation of the light poles of tracks 6 and 7, which make up the Rafa Nadal Track during the tournament, and the removal of walking sticks, the club’s transformation into an ATP 500 tournament will be inaugurated from 17 to April 25th. The whole assembly operation will last four weeks and will be done in phases to minimize the daily life of the members of the RCTB-1899. The Barcelona Open Banc Sabadell is one of the few tournaments on the ATP circuit that can boast of hosting tennis all year round, something that tennis players highly value when they come to play for the quality of the courts.
The first part of the transformation process is based on conditioning the tracks and the different spaces to house the bleachers that will be built later. To do this, all permanent obstacles such as spotlights, water sources, fences, fences and benches, among others, must be removed. Later, the construction of the mobile tier of the tracks will begin. A structure that, as every year, will be set up by Nussli, a leading sports construction company and official supplier of the Olympic Games.
From April 5, the traffic on Bosch i Gimpera Street will also be cut off and on April 17, the Marquès de Mulhacén Street will be closed. The Barcelona Open Banc Sabadell has the collaboration of the residents of Pedralbes, whose support is vital to grow the tournament year after year to position it as one of the best ATP 500 on the circuit.
